Starting in September, the clinic I attend will be offering LAAM (Orlaam). I haven't seen any discussion as to it's acceptance among former methadone patients and would be most interested in hearing other opinions, pro or con. I do know that they, the manufactures, tout their drug as a long acting "methadone like" drug. The obvious benefit being that a dose has an average extended duration of 72 hours, hence every other day visits to the clinic.

This all sounds swell but what about the patients who are already have take homes? What happens when a methadone patient switches to LAAM and puts in their required time for take-home privileges? Do they go back on methadone?

I do know that LAAM costs much more than methadone and I wonder how long it will take the clinic's management to jack-up the cost of treatment? Lots of questions but not many answers.

Just wondering,
Dennis Andrews
